» Thracian Beehive Tomb – town of PomorieThracian Beehive Tomb – town of Pomorie
The antique beehive tomb in the town of Pomorie (situated on the coast of the Black Sea) is a cultural monument of national and world significance. It was built back in II – III century and represents an original combination of a typical Thracian beehive tomb and a Roman mausoleum (specialists believe it served as something like mausoleum of a rich Anhiali family). It is located among gardens – some 500 m north of the Europe camping area. It reaches 8 m in height and 60 m in diameter. A corridor leads to a vast round premises, in the center of which a hollow pillar is rising, opening in its upper end like a mushroom passing into the walls. (therefore some people call the tomb “The Hollow Mound”).
The monument is open for visitors in the summer season.

Pomorie Salt Lake
The Pomorie salt lake is the northmost of the Bourgas lakes. It represents a super-salty lagoon of natural origin and is located in direct proximity to the town of Pomorie, occupying a territory of 850 ha. The southern part of the lake is used for healing mud extraction, while the northern is a famous salt-production center. The high saltiness of the lake waters predetermines the existence of specific plant and animal species around these places. The most valuable asset of the Pomorie salt lake, however, is the rich variety of bird species here. The existence of 215 bird species in the area of the lake has been proved, where 4 of these species are in the world book of endangered species. The lake is also a paradise for golden eyes and a winter camp of world importance for the mute swan.

St. Georgi Monastery near Pomorie
The monastery of St. Georgi near the coastal town of Pomorie is the only active monastery in Southeastern Bulgaria and a magnificent architectural monument of the National Revival. A marble bas-relief of a Thracian rider shows that once a Thracian sanctuary lied here and later, in 7 century, a Christian cloister rose on the spot. Originally the building was single-nave but was burned down and destroyed by the Ottomans, which is evidenced by the big charred icon of St. Georgi from 1607. The present church was built in 1856 during the Ottoman yoke with the financial support of the local Christians. The new cloister covers the old one, as only its façade has remained, reminding of the far 7 century. Because of the comparatively new appearance of the church there are no wall paintings. The altar was made by unknown master. In 1945 the church was expanded by two lateral altars – one of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the other – of the Holy martyrs Sofia, Vyara (Faith), Nadezhda (Hope), and Lyubov (Love).
Pomorie: salt, wine and history
Ancient Anhialo, as was known Pomorie in the remote past, was established in 6 – 5 century B.C. as a Hellenic colony. Its situation near important roads guarantees its prosperity and the propinquity of the village to a salty lake determines the development of the ancient craft – salt-production. The sea provides the charm of the other ancient craft in the region – fishery and the vine-growing remains from the worshipers of Bacchus, despite the fact it is not known whether they were local Tracians or Hellenic colonists. Survived through 25 centuries, many times burnt down and rebuilt again, the city hides in the land signs of raids of Romans, Byzantines, crusaders and Turks. The exponents from the archaeological collection are mute witnesses of the town’s millennial wild life. Unique historical and cultural monuments are the Thracian Beehive Tomb, museum Old Anhialo Salt-Mines, and churches Christ and St. Mother of God, St. Georgi Monastery and the architecture reserve Old Pomorie Houses.
